Intensive Interaction Workshop for Parents & Carers

“Not being able to speak is not the same as not having anything to say”

(Caldwell 2007)

What is it?

Intensive Interaction was developed for people with severe or complex learning disabilities. It’s used by professionals to help communicate when a child is reluctant to interact with anyone or not interested in what is going on around them. Intensive Interaction can also be used at home.

How is it used?

It can be used to support communication in children with learning disabilities, autism, complex needs, sensory or physical impairments. By responding to their facial expressions, echoing sounds they make and copying their movements, you react to what they do, whilst allowing your child take the lead. The aim is to gain their attention, encouraging further communication, so your child will want more.

How can it benefit my child?

Intensive Interaction can stop children feeling anxious, confused and isolated by helping them to develop early communication skills. It can help them to feel more relaxed and may have a positive effect on their behaviour.
